Cholly the Pinker
Most of those of you on my f-list know by now that nothing makes me mad faster than discrimination, whether it's over race, sex, or sexual orientation. Kind of weird maybe, because I'm a straight white male, but it's my biggest, touchiest button. I'm fairly involved in the Courage Campaign which is taking on the hot button issues of gay rights.
I've been pro gay rights for some time, but when little sister came out of the closet, it got personal.
Right now, two of the Courage Campaign's main focal points are on repealing California's Proposition 8 and DOMA, the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act". I call it the Defense Of Hate Act, because to me, that's all it is; thinly disguised hate.
I feel so strongly about this that it will be posted public, normally my posts are friends only. Below is the message that I sent, in hopes of maybe inspiring you to do the same.
Below that is a link for sending the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals a message and/or picture about how you feel about the subject and/or how the decision to not immediately rule Proposition 8 affects you or someone you care about.
I'm a 50 year old straight, married male with a 17 year old child. I believe Proposition 8 is illegally legislated discrimination. Proponents say that it protects the sanctity of marriage. I ask HOW? What does giving two people that truly love each other but happen to be of the same sex the same rights as two people of opposite sex harm those of us who are attracted to the opposite sex?
Religious reasons? Then why don't we start denying atheists the right to marry too? Then Buddhists or any other non-Christian religion. Oh, right, separation of church and state...
But then we could outlaw divorce too! Do you see where I'm going with this?
We have civil marriage already. Why can't gays and lesbians avail themselves of it? Why must they be denied dignity as human beings?
As far as the "choice" bunk science goes, it's just that, bunk. Anyone who has known a homosexual as a person has seen what they go through just coming to terms with who and what they are. My own sister went through literal hell, she did NOT want to be different.
Proposition 8 is legislated hate, and flies in the face of our constitution, no matter how it is disguised. Let's end the discrimination!
