As most of my f-list knows, I was pro-rights even before, but when my younger sister came out to me in 1999, it got personal. We were both born in the early 60's when being gay was an extreme stigma during our growing up years. I didn't know what was causing it then, but I saw the hell my sister went through, she did NOT want to be different, and because of that, was extremely judgmental and profoundly unhappy.
Fortunately for her she was able to come to terms with who and what she is rather than suiciding like so many others, and doubly fortunate to be born in a family that was readily able to accept her difference.
She and and my sister-in-love have been together over 12 years now, longer than most marriages nowadays. I think that it's a travesty that two people that are so committed to each other can not legally marry. I think my sister-in-love is pretty special in her own right, I'd like her even if she wasn't special to my sister.
In reference to my sister and sister-in-love, even our very old school father told me before he had the stroke that took his mind, "To me, the way I was raised, it's wrong. But those two are so good to and for each other that I can't see why." His only real concerns were for there safety, they were living openly as a couple in a town with a population of about 200.
The time has come. The haters are reeling as their hatred and bigotry are revealed for what they truly are and more people are coming to see that their actions against gays are wrong, a violation to their constitutional rights as written. The last poll results that I saw had 51% in Washington State in favor of legalizing gay marriage, not counting the undecided.
Let's do this.
Ordered a Vincent Price DVD from Borders.com earlier this month, it was on back order, The Oblong Box and Scream and Scream Again. Got an e-mail tonight telling me it was on it's way! Woot! Scream and Scream Again scared the snot out of me when I was a wee feller, along with The Abominable Dr. Phibes and it sequel. Vincent Price was awesome!
I could have sworn I had an FC Benny Hills toilet GIF stashed just for this occasion but I can't find the darn thing. I have to say I do kinda miss the old Fortune City, with the forum wars and just plain fun it was before Tone hung me with the Minister's job and everything went south.
Anyway, Happy Birthday Merv, and even if you no longer have the site, we are all Bob! Moo.
As a good chunk of my f-list lives outside the US o A, they won't affected by a particularly brilliant sodding piece of legislation in the House of Representatives currently, name HR669, The Invasive Species Act. So I am doing something highly unusual for me, posting public.
Nevermind that it would cripple a multi billion dollar industry at a time when our economy is already reeling, nevermind that it would cause everyday ordinary citizens to become "criminals", nevermind that it has NO, ZIP, ZERO, NADA quantifiable benefit with a huge quantifiable amount of harm, it was proposed by a legislator SO IT MUST BE GOOD. The proposer is the Delegate from Guam, Del. Madeleine Bordallo [D-GU].
This brilliant bit of legislation is so f***ing broad and ill thought out, it's almost unbelievable. If it isn't on the following list, it is not approved, and it's a damn short list, you cannot:
1)Buy or sell it
3)Transport it across state lines even if you have a grandfathered animal, if you move.
4)Even if it does somehow make it onto the list, it will be unmailable.(A common practice for serious fish breeders)
any cat (Felis catus)
cattle or oxen (Bos taurus)
chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus)
dog (Canis lupus familiaris)
donkey or ass (Equus asinus)
domesticated members of the family Anatidae (geese)
duck (domesticated Anas spp.)
goat (Capra aegagrus hircus)
goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus)
horse (Equus caballus)
llama (Lama glama)
mule or hinny (Equus caballus x E. asinus)
pig or hog (Sus scrofa domestica)
domesticated varieties of rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
sheep (Ovis aries)
or any other species or variety of species that is determined by the Secretary to be common and clearly domesticated.
Hamsters aren't there, guinea pigs, parakeets, parrots, nope. Bettas, guppies, ball pythons(max length 6 feet), chameleons, bearded dragons, canaries, nope. Not approved. With the exception of dogs, cats, goldfish and maybe rabbits depending on zoning laws, these are farm animals.
How many "fish only" stores are in your local area? How many do you think can survive selling only goldfish? Almost all tropical fish are imported or bred from imported stock. Most lizards kept in the US are the same. How many "Mop and Pop" pet stores will go belly up if this passes? Chain stores? How many jobs will it cost? It will be illegal to breed GUPPIES for crying out loud.
What crap. If you live in the US, call and write your Representatives. Keep it clean, one curse word and any points you made or would have made after that go out the window. The bill is in committee, let's make sure it never makes it out. I've written every Representative in my state, and my Senators, just in case this garbage gets out of the House. This Monday is National Call In Day, let's flood their phone lines. Let them know we think this is one of the worst bills ever written.
I love Craigslist. I was keeping an eye on it for a cheap 55 gallon, as I have a pair of juvenile African Brown Knife fish in my 29, but that will shortly be too small for them. Had seen one before I had available cash, but not since. Then last weekend, an ad showed up for a 45 gallon long. Came with cover, light, heater, 2 HOB filters and about 60-70 pounds of gravel...for fifty bucks. If not exactly what I had been looking for, it's big enough, and I couldn't beat the price, so it now resides in my computer/fish room. WOOT!
Unfortunately, on the drive home, I heard a "tink!" Fortunately, it wasn't the tank, but the heater did not survive the trip home. Grr... Only a little "grr" though, overall I'm still extremely pleased.
Went to start my MP3 player at work, "Low battery, powering down". Oh well, had an emergency AAA battery in the glovebox, went and got it at first break. It didn't even have enough juice in it to give me the low battery message...
I was rather slow about this, but when my daughter began to show interest in seeing a Harry Potter movie, I sat down and watched Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with her. I then went out and bought it and the other three DVDs. After watching them all(more than once each, too) I thought to myself, "When has movie ever been better than the book?", I went and got the first book, read it, and went back out and bought the other 5. These books are great for any age, not just young readers, J.K. Rowling rocks, the books just get progressively better, and they started out pretty damn good to begin with. I can hardly wait for the next book/movie, I am definitely a convert.
A warning to the unwary, the end of the sixth book leaves a major cliffhanger, almost as bad as Star Trek: The Next Generation, when Locutis had been introduced and Ryker said, "Fire."
